Number the Stars: Chapters 3 and 4

In Chapter 3 page 25 Annemarie says "Now I think that all of Denmark must be the bodyguard for the Jews, as well".  On page 26 the narrator tells us that Annemarie is glad she is an "ordinary person who will never be called upon for courage".

Compare and contrast these statements. Is Annemarie courageous or timid?

  1. I think Annemmarie is courageous about being an ordinary person. When Annemarie says "Now I think that all of Denmark must be the bodyguard for the Jews, as well" I think she is timid, but to me if you combine the statements together they egual more timid because she still isnt sure about what the narrator said she was glad to be an ordinary person.

  3. Annemarie does the same thing by saying that she is glad that she will never come upon courage. To me I think that is being timid in that sentence. In the other sentence she is saying that Denmark must be the bodyguard for Jews. So in this sentence I think she is courageous. She is being really nice to the Jews for saying that.

  4. I think Annemarie is timid because she likes being one of the crowd and does not wantto be like her sister being mean to soldiers slapping there hands she hates being one of the crowd and kirsti has to have her way about everything Annemarie does not want to be like her sister that’s what I think timid.

  5. I think that Annemarie is timid because she likes to be ordinary and she is timid because she scared that the solders might come and take Ellen away from her.

  6. Annemarie is courage on pg.25 because she will do anything to help her friend from going with the germen soldiers.pg.26 Annemarie is timid because she don’t want to go with the Jews to the germen jail. She wants to live a normal life.

  7. Annemarie is kind of timid because on page 25 Annemarie says "Now I think that all of Denmark must be the bodyguard for the Jews, as well". On page 26 the narrator tells me that Annemarie is glad she is an "ordinary person who will never be called upon for courage". So that says that she doesn’t want to have to go up in front of the Nazi’s because she knows that she can’t fight them alone, because she wants to be able to have courage, but she’s afraid to have courage and to be courageous.

  9. The part when she says now I think that all of the Denmark must be the bodyguard for the Jews I think in that part she is courageous because they have to watch over Ellen for a few nights so she might feel a little crazy. In the second part I also say she is courageous because she is glad that she does not have to be a Danish Jew because she does not want that to happen to her.

  10. In chapter 3 pg.25 Annemarie sounds courageous when she asks her father if he remembered what the boy told the soldier about all of Denmark is the kings bodyguard then Annemarie said now I think all of Denmark should be the bodyguard for the Jews as well. I think she is courageous in that moment . In chapter 3 pg.26 Annemarie admitted to herself snuggling there in the dark that she was glad to be an ordinary person who would never could be called upon for courage. . I think Annemarie sounds timid at that moment

  11. one difference is that when she is saying that all of denmark should be the bodygaurds for the danish Jews then she is saying that she is glad she is a normal person like she does not want to fight the nazi soliders because she can not win when she is saying everybody should protect the jews. one smilarity is that they both have to do with protecting the Jews. Annemarie is timid because she did not say rude things like kirsti did to the soliders.

  13. Annemarie is timid because she is glad she is an ordinary person and isn’t called upon for courage. Annemarie is timid also when she gets worried about if the soldiers come and get Ellen. I think Annemarie is more timid than she is courageous.

  14. Annemarie to me is very courageous because when she was only seven years old she had said she would die for the King. Not only her but even her family are courageous and generous to risk maybe there life and getting in trouble over hiding Ellen in there home from the German soldiers. And she said to herself in her dark room she may die for all Denmark’s Jews. To me Annemarie is extremely courageous in so many ways.

  16. I think that Annemarie is timid and courageous because she seems afraid of being called out on to be courageous and save the day but she is also courageous because she has the courage to do things and stand up for others and a lot of people can’t do that because their afraid of getting hurt or being made fun of and I think that Annemarie has that kind of courage.

  17. One difference is that at one time she says that everyone should be the bodyguard for the Danish Jews (including herself ) then she says that she is glad she is a normal person and not to be called upon for courage like she excluding herself from the body guard thing. One similarity is that both things that she says has to do with protecting the Jews.
I think that Annemarie is very timid unlike kirstie who is very bold.

  18. I think that Annemarie is timid because she likes to be ordinary .And she doesn’t want the solders to take Ellen away.

  19. I think that she is being timid about what she said when she was talking about she is glad that she will never be called upon courage. Then she is courageous about that she said that Denmark must be a bodyguard for the Jews. So I think she is kind of both courageous and timid. She is neutral and the reason I think that is because in one part she sounds courageous and the other part she sounds like she does not want anything and she is fine

  20. I think that Annemarie is timid because she hasn’t done anything courageous. And she doesn’t like the Nazi soldiers. And she is a little scared of the soldiers. But I think she is courageous on the outside but timid on the inside.

  21. What I think Annemarie means is that she doesn't want to stand out or become recognized for anything. But she also wants to help save all the Jews because her friend is a Jew and she also knows that what is happening is wrong.

  22. “Now I think that all of Denmark should be bodyguards for the Jews, as well”.

I think that in chapter 3 page 25:
Annemarie was being courageous because she wanted to help the King Christian be safe. I also believe that she wanted to be brave enough to die for her Papa and Grandma.

  23. What I think Annemarie means is that she doesn't want to stand out or become recognized for anything. But she also wants to help save all the Jews because her friend is a Jew and she also knows that what is happening is wrong. For that reason I think she is both timid and courageous.

  24. Annemarie is timid because she is afraid that Ellen will be taken away by the soldiers,
She is also timid because she is afraid of being called up for courage.

  25. I think annemarie is timid she is scared of the soldiers to come into her house and take ellen away from her because she does not want her best friend to leave her I would fell the same way about the soldiers but I also think she courageous because she lied to the soldiers about ellen was lise even though if they caught her lying she would probably have consequences of her action.

  26. Annemarie is more timid than courageous because she is the kind of person that tries to be courageous and tough but really she just wants to help without getting hurt or hurting anybody else. She said that she is happy that she is an ordinary person that will never be called out for courage. She also wants to be a part of Denmark being a bodyguard for King Christian.

  29. When Annemarie said “now I think that all of Denmark must be the Jews bodyguard for the Jews as well”. I think that she is trying to say that it is not fair what they are doing so Denmark should be the slaves for them. And Annemarie is ordinary because she is not a Jew and would never get called one of them.

  30. The part when she says she will protect the king is courageous because that’s very scary
to protect the king because he could have some serious people to go to war with. When she says now I’m glad who never called up for courage I think that she is timid when she says that because she might not want to be the person who gets tooken away.

  33. I think that Annemarie is courageous because she says all of Denmark can be the bodyguard for the king and she was so courageous when the guards told her to halt. Annemarie is timid she was also timid when she was told to halt by the soldiers because it was Annemarie first time getting stopped by the soldiers

  34. Chapter 4
What Ellen means when she said she wanted to be the bodyguard for the King Christian, I think that she was being courageous because she wanted to be brave and strong to protect the King.

  35. One similarity is that in those statements are that they are talking about courage because you need courage to protect people and then Annemarie says that she is glad she is not one to be called upon for courage. One difference is that Annemarie is basically saying I’m scared and I am not brave and then she talks about EVERYONE needs to protect the Jews. I think that Annemarie is timid because she says that she is glad she is not one to be called upon for courage.

  36. Annemarie is timid because she doesn’t really like being around the German soldier. And the reason Annemarie is not courageous is because she was a little nervous when the soldiers came in.
