Number the Stars: Chapters 1and 2

Welcome to the first edition of our Number the Stars blog.  Students have read Chapters 1-3 (as of today) and are working on learning how to discuss books in "Book Clubs" at school.  Please join us in our online discussion through your personal response to the text or an encouraging comment to others posts.

Chapter 1/2
What does Mrs. Rosen mean when she tells the girls, "It is important to be one of the crowd, always?"  How do you think Annemarie will react to Mrs. Rosen's direction?  How will Ellen react?

When answering this question think about how Annemarie and Ellen's lives have changed over the past three years (look in Chapter 2).

  1. I think annemarie will be okay with the direction because she doesn't need to stand out.I think that ellen will be okay with it because annemarie is.

  2. I think the meaning osf Mrs. Rosen menrt they dont need to make themselves stand out to the guards.
Annemarie probably will not run anymore but I dont think sha will try as hard as she needs too,too stay in the crowd.Ellen is a little more catious than Annemarie so I think she will try to blend in with the crowd.

    1. I agree with you Mackenzie because Annemarie was pretty shocked when the soldier said “Halte”.

  3. What Mr.Rosen means when she says "It is important to be one of the crowd, always" is that she is nervous that they are in danger of being captured for being Jewish. She will try harder to blend in like she was told to do. I think she will be catious about who she talks to and where she goes.

  4. Mrs.Rosen means that dont get yourself in trouble from being alonw with only a few people. Like in the passage when the girls ran into the German Soilders the soilders said "Halte!" all the girls were nervous, so what Mrs.Rosen is saying if your in a crowd it will be hard to see your face that the soilders have memorized. I think Annemarie will follow Mrs.Rosens dirctions because, Annemarie is a very well behaved girl. I think Ellen will follow what Annemarie does because, Ellen is a follower to me.

    2. I think that how Annemarie will act is in a shaky, nervous way.
What Mrs. Rosen means when she said “It is important to be one of the crowd, always?”
Is that you should never be alone, and you should not be the out-crowd you should be the in-crowd.

  5. Mrs.Rosen ment try to not be known by the soldiers to just have a low profile and I think Annemarie and Ellen will listen to Mrs.Rosens orders.

  6. Since they got hollered at by the German soldiers, their moms were alarmed so their moms told them to go to school the longer way so that the German soldiers wouldn’t stop them again, because if the blend in with the crowd then the German soldiers probably won’t recognize them and they won’t have to go to a concentration camp, because if they didn’t at least try to blend in with the crowd they would get caught a lot quicker and a lot easier. Annemarie will probably try her best to do what Mrs. Rosen had asked, but I think that it will be very hard to do what Mrs. Rosen had asked because Kirstie would probably walk up to the soldier and say, Hey, don’t touch my hair again! And then the soldiers would recognize her and would pick her up and start looking for Annemarie and they would probably find Annemarie and drive both of them off to concentration camps. And instead of Ellen walking with them to school, she probably would have walked to school by herself instead of walking to school with them every day.

  7. Mrs. Rosen means that it is always good to be a person who always fits in with other people. Annemarie probably will react in a weird way. Ellen will act the same way or in a understanding way

  8. I think that Mrs. Rosen told the girls to "Be one of the crowd" because she was worried that the German Soldiers would recognize them and they would report them and they would probably be throne in jail or be in big trouble with The Nazis and Adolf Hitler which would be really bad.

  10. What mrs. rosen means when she says just be one of the crowd she means blend in and don’t do any thing crazy or different just be alike the others so the soldiers wont have a reason to remember there faces ever again. I think Annemarie will react to the direction ms. Rosen gave she will fallow the directions and be one of the crowd because she does not want to feel the feeling she had when the soldiers caught her running but I also think it will be hard for her she really wants to practice racing for the school race. I think ellen will be ok with it she really did not want to race at all in the first place and I also think she will be able to never be caught by the soldiers ever again

  11. I think Mrs. Rosen means that if you are apart of the group the people will protect and care for you. I think Annemarie would follow what Mrs. Rosen says and walk the other way. I think Ellen would act the same way and just go the other way.

  12. When Mrs.Rosen says be apart of the crowd she meant that stick with everyone and the reason why she said that is because they got stopped by the German Soldiers and they don’t want to be recognize by the soldiers again. I think that Annemarie will act respectfully about what Mrs.Rosen because she is respectful and because you should not want to be recognized by a soldier over and over. Ellen will probably understand her mother because she is very shy and maybe her mother does not want her daughter to go that way anymore and she could get in trouble if she does not listen to her mother.

  13. I think that Mrs. Rosen wanted the girls to be apart of the crowd. Because she didn’t want the girls to get recognized again. And Ellen will follow . Annmarie because they are best friends and she don’t want to get in trouble again.

  14. What she means is that they need to be like other people instead of being you. I think that Annemarie will follow the advice that Mrs. Rosen gave her. And Ellen will also listen to Mrs. Rosen because that is her mom.

  15. what she is saying to annemarie and ellen is to be in a crowd and not to be by yourself so the nazi soldiers do not see your face and realize who you are. Annemarie most likely will because she does not want to get in trouble. Ellen will because she does what annemarie does and thats her mom I think.

  16. What Mrs.Rosen means is the girls need to stay in one crowd instead of running around were they can get captured by the Germany soldiers like the Jews were.

  17. Mrs.Rosen told them to fit in with the crowd because the german soldiers will see them.Annemarie and Ellen will take the longer way because they want get stopped by the soldiers anymore.

  18. The reason Mrs. Rosen told them to stay in the crowd was to keep them from getting caught again and so Ellen, Mrs. Rosen, and Mr. Rosen don’t go to the concentration camp because their Jewish. Annemarie will probably listen to Mrs. Rosen because she does not want to have her face to be recognized. Ellen will listen to her mother because she does not want any thing to happen to their family and she does not want to get hurt, she asked why can’t they walk like civilized people and so they won’t get caught.

  19. I think that the reason that Mrs. Rosen told Annemarie and Ellen to be part of the crowd is because the German soldiers have already caught them once and have most likely memorized Kristie’s face because the soldier’s that Annemarie and Ellen call “giraffe” in whispers said “She is pretty, like my own little girl. Q.1.

I think that Annemarie will try her best to follow Mrs. Rosen’s orders. Q.2.

I think that Ellen will follow whatever Annemarie decides to do because Annemarie is more of a leader than Ellen, Ellen is more of a follower. Q.3.

  20. Because Mrs. Rosen wanted them to blend into the crowd because the guards would see them and recognize them and because they got in trouble once and if they get in trouble again they probably will get in lots of trouble. Annemarie will follow her directions because she might get seen by the guards. Ellen will follow the directions because the guards night see Ellen.

  21. I think that Mrs. Rosen told them to blend in with the crowd because the germen soldiers could recognize them from when they got stopped and should obey what Mrs. Rosen says or they could get in big trouble if they don’t listen. I think Annemarie will react just fine with blending in with the crowd. I think Ellen will act a little skittish because she is a little bit shy

  22. I think what Mrs. Rosen meant is to try to be a popular so that what happened with the german soliders won’t happen again. I think that Annmarie will listen to Mrs. Rosen because she had got freaked out by the soliders once and don’t want to be again. I also think that ellen will listen to Mrs. Rosen because she usally listens to Annmarie because she is a shy kind of person unlike Annmarie.

  23. Mrs. Rosen means that the girls need to stay with the crowd so they do not get recognized by the German soldiers.

2nd question/ answer she will listen because there is a war going on an because she listens to her mom or because her little sister has a big mouth
Ellen will listen because she is timid and shy.

  24. Mrs. Rosen don’t want the children to
    Get hurt. Annemarie will proboley
Obey her mother Ellen would do same
    thing

  25. I think what Mrs. Rosen meant that the soldiers will remember Annemarie and Ellen’s faces if they keep getting noticed. In the passage after Kirsti told how soldier said to her she was cute like his little girl Mrs. Johansen said “if he has such a pretty little girl, why doesn’t he go back to her like a good father?” so I think she doesn’t like the soldiers nether.

Annemarie will probably listen to her mother and Mrs. Rosen and be the crowd other than noticed. And so will Ellen because she is more civilized to me. In the passage it says while Annemarie and Ellen were on there way to there apartment they said “I was so scared” said Ellen “me too” said Annemarie. So it taught them a lesson not to run in the street.

  26. What does Mrs. Rosen mean when she tells the girls, "It is important to be one of the crowd, always?" How do you think Annemarie will react to Mrs. Rosen's direction? How will Ellen react?

It means like every where you go its not going be calm its going to be crowed. Because the German soldiers is going to be looking out for people who do not listen.

I think she’s going to listen because if she don’t listen they going to capture and send her to jail or home. So you have to listen or you going to be in trouble.

She will be scared and shy.

    1. Devonte your right she might go in jail and stay their life. But she’s not a jaw so I don’t think she’s going to jail, she might get in trouble but not in jail. Annemarie is smart to follow Mrs. Robison direction. Annemarie

  27. I think what Mrs.Rosen is saying just be one of the people in the crowd to the girls because she don't want the German to remeber their faces so if one of the soldier said I remeber those girls they will get in trouble. Annemarie knew something was serious about what Mrs. Rosen said. Annemarie felt a little scared. Ellen was astounded and scared.

  32. I think that what Mrs. Rosen meant was that you should always fit in and that you shouldn’t look mysterious to the crowd and the Nazi soldiers. And that you might get in trouble and possible get arrested. And I think that Annemarie will listen and that she will try not to get in trouble.

  33. According to chapter two Mrs. Rosen tolled the Annemarie and Ellen ‘’it’s good to be part of the crowed always’’ the reaction to Annemarie and Ellen is that the two might try to obey Mrs. Rosen’s direction but they probably won’t be able to do exactly what Mrs. Rosen wants’.
