Number the Stars: Chapters 5 and 6

Did You Know?
Many of the world’s religions share beliefs about the importance of treating other people well.
One of these shared beliefs is the golden rule. In the collection of Jewish teaching called the
Talmud, this rule is stated as “The things you hate should not be done to others.” Christianity’s
Book of Luke in the New Testament states, “Do to others what you would wish them to do to
you.” Islam teaches, “You are not a real Muslim until you want for other people what you want
for yourself.” The Hindu Mahabharata states, “Do nothing to others that would cause you pain if
they did it to you.”

Why do you think that the soldiers were against the Jews and others while the Johansen's were working to protect them?

  1. The Nazi's didn't like the Jewish religion or the people that practiced it. They thought everybody should be a Christian, unlike they were being when they were doing these cruel things to these poor people. The reason the Johansen's were trying to help them is because the Rosen's are Jewish and they are their best friends.

  2. I think the soldiers are torturing Jews because they might want revenge or either they think Jews are different than them but while the Johansson’s are trying to protect them they might think people have rights to live the same as others

  3. I think that the German soldiers were after the Jews because the Germans king gave the soldiers a command to go and get all of the Jews and take them far away.
I think that the Johansen”s were protecting Ellen and her family is because that they were very best friends

  4. I think the soldiers are against jews because they revenge for something they done or maybe because they have different cultures. I think the Johansson’s are trying to help the jews because they believe in equal rights to have freedom and they don’t think it is right to take away jews because what if they were helping keep the country safe or maybe they might think they are just as important as they are.

The Johansen’s are there best friend they will help them through thick and thin.

  6. Annemarie is more timid than courageous because she is the kind of person that tries to be courageous and tough but really she just wants to help without getting hurt or hurting anybody else. She said that she is happy that she is an ordinary person that will never be called out for courage. She also wants to be a part of Denmark being a bodyguard for King Christian.

  7. I think the soldiers are against the Jews because they think they were bad luck or that they help their enemy's win wars or just don't like the Jews religion . The reason that I think the Johansons help the Jews is because they are friends with Jews and they don't think it's fair .

  9. I think that the Nazis are against the Jews because they do not believe that Jesus is god’s son. And that they don’t worship god the same as others. And Nazis think that everyone should be the same. And that they were also against them because the Johansens were protecting them and the Nazis were trying to stop them.

  10. I think the Germany soldieries were after the Jews because there king is commanding them to take the Jews and it took Annemarie and her Mother and Father to keep Ellen safe so she wouldn’t get captured by the Germany soldiers so they went to uncle Herrick’s house in Sweden.
